Lithuania - Caritas Lithuania
Caritas Lithuania is a non-governmental religious organization. First established in 1926 and then reestablished again after the Soviet period, Caritas Lithuania has been an associate member of Caritas Europe and Caritas Internationalis since 1991. Taking into regard the social needs and conditions of Lithuania’s people Caritas Lithuania develops and implements new social programs to cover some or even all country’s dioceses. The main areas of activities are family and children, help for people from risk groups, social care and nursing. At present there are 61 institutions operating within Caritas Lithuania, including 19 day care centers for children, 12 charity kitchens, and 2 terminal care hospitals.
Volunteer work is important part in spreading ideas of humanism among people and emphasizing the importance of physical, social, spiritual and psychological aid. About 80 % of the workers in CARITAS organisation are voluntary. Providing social care and nursing Caritas Lithuania seeks not only to work directly with beneficiaries providing needed assistance, but also to work according to basic principles of professional social work, engaging all family members into the systemic approach process for care.
Caritas Lithuania provides help and assistance for all people and families in need despite their religious believes or attitudes.
