Luxembourg - University of Luxembourg

The University of Luxembourg (UL) was founded in 2003 and comprises three faculties that contain 12 multidisciplinary equipped research units. The collaborators from Luxembourg are members of the Integrative Research Unit on Social and Individual Development (INSIDE), an interdisciplinary research unit focusing on social change phenomena associated with the demographic development in Europe. Special emphasis is given here to the ageing population, autonomy and dependence in old age, and to research into the social and individual conditions of care and long-term care of the elderly. Currently, several national projects are being carried out that will give insights into the psycho-social situation of informal family carers. This will have a direct impact on the development of content materials and training for carers and family carers respectively.

Furthermore, Luxembourg has national characteristics that are of a special importance for the project: on the one hand, the high proportion of foreign labour forces in Luxembourg; and, on the other hand, the multilingualism of Luxembourg’s society (i.e. Luxembourgish, German, French). Dealing with differing languages will represent one challenge of the care market, and Luxembourg represents a perfect “laboratory” to study these models. Findings on the national Luxembourg level will thus provide a significant input to the planning of the training programme for carers.
